The amount of times I have witnessed an ellipsis with anything up to 30 dots suggests there is a place for this post.
An ellipsis has three baseline dots and appears thus …
An ellipsis is used to indicate an omission in the text.
The following is an arbitrary expression mark………… and in context conveys a sense of interminable iteration, blah, blah, blah. It might be referred to as ‘folk’ grammar.
If the ellipsis occurs at the end of a sentence we omit the space before the ellipsis and add a period at the end thus…. The same rule applies for an exclamation mark, question mark etc.
If the ellipsis occurs after a comma, exclamation mark etc, then we dispose of the space,… like so.
Pay heed to the weight and letter spacing of the typeface and modify the space before and after the ellipsis accordingly.
